How to Maintain a Shiny and Healthy Dog Coat

There’s nothing like running your fingers through your dog’s soft, furry coat. But a shiny coat isn’t just nice to pet. It’s also a sign of your dog’s health.

It’s easier to achieve a shiny coat than you might think. Here’s what the team at The Bark Park Pet Resort wants you to know about pet skin and coat health.

Building Blocks of a Healthy Dog Coat

Whether we’re talking about coat care for dogs or coat care for cats, the foundations are the same. Here are four areas to pay attention to so you can keep your pet’s coat silky-smooth.

Include Omega Fatty Acids for Their Fur

A balanced diet is crucial to achieving a shiny pet coat. Look for foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. These nutrients help keep your pet’s skin hydrated and bring out the coat’s natural shine.

If you’re not sure how to feed your pet in the best possible way for a healthy pet coat, talk to your veterinarian for tips! Every pet is different, and your vet can help you figure out the best diet for them—and their coat health.

Grooming

Regular grooming is non-negotiable when it comes to coat care. Brushing your pet’s coat removes dead hair, distributes natural oils, and keeps the coat free of tangles and the all-too-dreaded mats.

Make sure you choose the right brush for your pet’s coat type. Slicker brushes are best for long-haired pets, while bristle brushes are ideal for short-haired cats and dogs.

Bath time is another grooming essential for pets. About once a month, use a pet-friendly shampoo made to support pet skin and coat health to bathe your pet. Avoid products with harsh chemicals that can strip natural oils. After the bath, gently towel-dry and brush your pet’s coat for extra smoothness.

Hydration and Environment

Hydration plays a huge role in maintaining a shiny pet coat. Make sure your pet has access to fresh water all day long. Additionally, protect your dog from harsh weather. Cold air can dry out the skin, but at the same time, excessive heat can lead to dehydration. Keep the air balanced somewhere in between!

A Routine That Shines

By following these pet grooming tips, your furry companion’s coat will be the envy of the dog park—or the neighborhood cat colony!
