Dog-Safe Fall Treats (and What to Avoid!)

The Bark Park Pet Resort & Daycare • September 12, 2025
A tan and white dog with ears perked up lies amidst a vibrant pile of red, orange, and yellow autumn leaves.

Fall is one of the coziest times of the year—pumpkin spice, apple picking, and hearty holiday meals fill our homes. While it’s tempting to share these seasonal flavors with your pup, not all fall foods are safe for dogs. Knowing what’s safe (and what to avoid) will keep your furry friend healthy and happy this autumn.

Fall Foods Dogs Can Eat

1. Pumpkin (plain, cooked, or canned)

  • Pumpkin is not only safe but also great for your dog’s digestion. Just make sure it’s plain pumpkin without added sugar, spices, or pie filling.

2. Sweet Potatoes (cooked, plain)

  • Rich in vitamins and fiber, sweet potatoes are a fantastic fall treat for dogs when served cooked and unseasoned.

3. Apples (seedless and sliced)

  • Apples are a crunchy, refreshing snack full of vitamins A and C. Be sure to remove the seeds and core before serving.

4. Carrots

  • This year-round veggie is extra fun in the fall! They’re great for your pup’s teeth and make a healthy, low-calorie treat.

5. Green Beans (plain, cooked, or raw)

  • Packed with nutrients and low in calories, green beans make an excellent snack for pups.

Fall Foods Dogs Can’t Eat

1. Grapes and Raisins

  • Even in small amounts, grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs and can cause serious health issues.

2. Onions, Garlic, and Chives

  • These common fall recipe ingredients can damage your dog’s red blood cells, leading to anemia.

3. Chocolate (including cocoa powder)

  • Chocolate is always a no-go for dogs, especially when baking fall treats like brownies or cookies.

4. Nutmeg

  • Found in pumpkin spice blends, nutmeg can cause disorientation, increased heart rate, and even seizures in dogs.

5. Dough with Yeast

  • Unbaked bread dough can expand in a dog’s stomach, causing painful bloating and potentially dangerous complications.

Fall is full of delicious foods, but not every seasonal favorite is safe for pups. Stick to healthy dog-friendly options like pumpkin, apples, and sweet potatoes, and avoid toxic foods to ensure your dog has a happy and healthy autumn.
